Policeman killed, another wounded in Indian-controlled Kashmir militant attack

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 16 (Xinhua) -- A policeman was killed and another wounded after militants attacked them in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Friday.

The police party was attacked late Thursday evening in Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Late last evening militants attacked a police party at Hyderpora locality here," a police official told Xinhua.

"The attack wounded two policemen, who were immediately removed to army's base hospital. However, of the wounded policemen, one succumbed to his wounds during the night."

The attack took place about three km away from Srinagar international airport.

Following the attack police issued an alert in the region.

"We have sounded an alert across Kashmir including Srinagar," a local newspaper quoted region's Police Chief Shesh Paul Vaid as having said. "A tight vigil is being maintained at all entry and exit points. All security installations are already on high alert in the wake of recent spurt in militant attacks on forces."

The attack in Srinagar was second strike by militants within four hours span on Thursday. Earlier, during the evening militants shot dead a policeman at his village in southern Kulgam district.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of the attacks.

Last month, an Indian army officer from Kulgam was kidnapped and subsequently killed by militants in neighbouring Shopian district. The officer, a local resident, was in Shopian village to attend marriage ceremony of his cousin.

Militants in the region usually target families and individuals for their possible links with Indian police and defense agencies. Even people having associations with pro-India political parties are targeted at times.

There has been an increase in militant attacks in districts south of Srinagar.
