Tokyo stocks close flat as Wall Street-led gains pared by yen's rise

TOKYO, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed flat Thursday as early gains made on positive sentiment after the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high overnight were canceled out in later trade by the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 1.43 points, or 0.01 percent, from Wednesday to end the day at 20,099.81.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 0.23 point, or 0.01 percent, to finish at 1,619.11.

Air transportation and services issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play. Whereas marine transportation and rubber product issues led those that declined.

Declining issues outpaced advancing ones by 994 to 882 on the First Section, and on the main section on Thursday 1,739.57 million shares changed hands, compared to Wednesday's volume of 1,480.42 million shares.

The turnover on the penultimate trading day of the week totaled 1,981.5 billion yen (17.55 billion U.S. dollars).
