BUCHAREST, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Romania celebrated its National day on Friday with a military parade organized at the Triumphal Arch in its capital city.
Over 3,500 military personnel and 50 aircraft paraded alongside troops from several partner countries, attracting thousands of citizens.
Over 300 foreign military staff from several countries also attended the celebrations marking the unification of Romanian provinces.
"The 1st of December represents our ideal as a nation to be free and united in a prosperous Romania," President Klaus Iohannis said earlier in a video message, before attending the ceremony.
Speakers of both houses of parliament, the second and third figures in this country, were absent from the event, highlighting tensions between the president and the ruling coalition comprising the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats.
Romania's National Day marks the country's unification in 1918 and the formation of the Romanian state within its present-day boundaries. National Day has been celebrated in Romania since Dec. 1, 1990.[ Editor: meng ]
