Beijing, more open to the world

Editor’s note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up, and huge changes have been made in Beijing, capital of China, over the past 40 years. We have invited 40 foreign experts to participate in a series of interviews named “New Era, New Insight” jointly hosted by GMW.cn(The official website of Guangming Daily) and the Information Office of Beijing Municipality and share their “Beijing Stories”. The following is a part of the interview with the Chile commercial counselor in China, Bei Anzhi.

Hello, my name is Bei Anzhi, I’m the Chile commercial counselor in China.

This is the third time I came to Beijing. It’s my home I think. The first time I came to Beijing was 1988 with my father who is a diplomatist. Then the second time I came to Beijing was from 1992 to 1995. I was studied in a Chinese school. So this is the third time I came to Beijing for work.

Chile is far away from China. It is the farthest country from China. If you dig a hole in Xi’an, you can take a visit directly to our capital Santiago.

We could buy food only in special stores in those days. Diplomats could get imported products only in some special places. But it’s very convenient to buy overseas food now. I can contact seller online and the food from Chile including cherry, wine, salmon, king crab will be delivered in 48 hours. It’s very fresh.

We signed a free trade agreement with China in 2006. Chile is the first country that signed a free trade agreement with China.

In 2005 when we started to discuss the agreement with China, Chile has only US$ 13 million fresh fruit export. In 2016, Chile has more than US$ 1.3 billion fresh fruit export. You can see the huge change.

I believe that the free trade agreement signed by Chile and China has the highest liberalization. We are glad to see.

Chinese vehicles are popular in Chile. Because those products are import with tax exemptions or reductions according to the free trade agreement, which made people’s incomes increased.

We welcome Chinese company to invest in Chile.

We certainly believe that Chinese companies will bring more competition to Chile’s economy in some fields.

I believe that Chile and China will be developed well on trading.
