Photojournalist Society of China (CPS)

Under the leadership of Communist Party of China (CPC), the Photojournalist Society of China (CPS) is composed of news agencies and individuals across China who are engaged in photojournalism on a voluntary basis. It is a national, professional, academic and non-profit public organization as well as a bridge connecting the Party and the government with the nation's photojournalism circle.

With approval by the CPC Central Committee’s Publicity Department, the Photojournalist Society of China (CPS) was established in 1983. It is guided and supervised by All-China Journalists Association, to which it is affiliated, and Ministry of Civil Affairs, who is in charge of non-governmental organization registration and administration. The CPS has over 1,000 group members and over 5,500 individual members.

Main routine activities of The Photojournalist Society of China (CPS): Carrying out special training sessions on Marxist journalistic values and corresponding theories about journalism and public opinion work; Carrying out photojournalism theory research and discussing socialist photojournalism with Chinese characteristics; Organizing members to write photojournalism theses and holding annual meetings to promote reform and development of photojournalism.

Entrusted by the All-China Journalists Association, the CPS organizes preliminary assessment of photojournalism works competing for the China News Awards. Entrusted by central government ministries and commissions and local governments, it holds the China Photojournalism Week and carries out assessment and exhibition of photojournalism works. As required by the CPC Central Committee’s Publicity Department and All-China Journalists Association, the CPS organizes reporting trips to the grass-roots level, rural and border areas. It also compiles and publishes books, photo albums, almanacs, historical data and magazines about photojournalism.

It carries out professional education, training and consultation services as well as international and regional academic exchanges on photojournalism. It also advocates photojournalists’ professional self-discipline and safeguards their lawful rights and interests.
