New Zealand retail card spending bounces back

WELLINGTON, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand retail card spending bounced back in August after remaining flat for five months, the county's statistics department Stats NZ said on Tuesday.

"Card spending in retail industries bounced back after a quiet period in the previous five months," retail statistics manager Sue Chapman said.

Adjusted for seasonal effects, retail card spending rose 1.1 percent in August 2019, when most retail industries saw increased spending.

Compared with July 2019, spending rose across five of the six retail industries and the largest increases were durables, consumables and hospitality.

Sales of clothes and shoes also picked up in August, according to Chapman.
