Coach seeks more time to improve Kenya rugby dismal World Series season

NAIROBI, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Kenya rugby coach Paul Feeney has wished away concerns over relegation from the World Series over a string of dismal performances.

Instead, the coach has sent out a passionate plea for time and support as he works around the clock to turn around the fortunes of the Kenya team, which currently is in position 12, three tiers above relegation spot.

"I feel the fans disappointment because I too share the same frustration. I have only been around for four months and though it is a short time, the plans we have put in motion are good to build on a winning team," Feeney said on Tuesday.

With the coronavirus outbreak throwing the rugby season, just like other sport disciplines, in disarray, Feeney hopes the team will return stronger to push for the season-ender with more precision and success.

So far Kenya has been able to reach the Main Cup quarters on two occasions in Hamilton, New Zealand and Cape Town South Africa.

With 35 points to show for their labored effort, Kenya look stagnant in their development despite having the entire elite senior squad at the coach's disposal.

Feeney has the chance to redeem his stay by improving show in London (May 24-25), Paris (May 30-31), Singapore (October 10-11) and Hong Kong (Oct. 16-18) should the health situation improve. With over 20 star players to pick from, the coach will be spoiling for choice.

"I have identified in the last four legs going into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but this coronavirus could destabilize that plan," said Feeney

Thomas Odundo, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Director, has since advised all players to self-quarantine to stop the spread of the virus.

"Kenya Sevens team recently returned from Los Angeles and Vancouver is advised to self-quarantine for 14 days from their arrival on March 10. Whereas sport, in general, is not banned, no team training will occur in the meantime," said Odundo.

Coaches are encouraged to send out individualized programs to their players.
