Verbena and lavender flowers plated in hundreds of hectares of land are blooming, filling the air with fragrance at Aiyi Lavender Ecological Base in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia Hui autonomous region.
The area, which borders the Maowusu Desert, used to be barren land. At present, the "flower sea" makes a clear contrast with the garish yellow desert, and it is the result of a three-year efforts from the workers at Aiyi Lavender Ecological Base.
Covering more than 220 hectares of land, the base has more than 10 types of flowers, including lavender, verbena, chrysanthemum and more than 20 types of trees, including pinus sylvestris and poplar.
While planting various flowers and recovering the ecology with plants, the base has integrated flower observation and desert exploration as a tourism spot which attracts many tourists, and it has begun to generate economic value for society.
Ningxia has turned more than one million hectares of desert into land planted with plants since 2011, and it is expected to handle 33,000 hectares of desert land for desertification control and prevention in 2020.
