In 1980, China established its first four special economic zones in Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Shantou in south China's Guangdong Province, and Xiamen in southwest China's Fujian Province.
In 1988, China made Hainan Isalnd in south China a seperate province and a speicl economic zone.
In 2010, China established two special economic zones in Kashgar and Horgos in northwest China's Xinjiang.
Tremendous changes have taken place in the special economic zones regarding infrastructure, trade and commerce, cityscape, as well as tourism. They have evolved from small towns and citys and are still on their ways of devlopment.
