CBS News confirmed on Mar. 3, 2021 that up to now, over 300 people related to the protest in US capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 have been charged, while more than 280 people have been arrested. It is known from an US Justice Department official that the department has opened files on approximately 540 subjects, featuring the most common charges of conspiracy, destruction of government property statute, assault on law enforcement officers, etc.

Double standard of western countries

The protest in US capitol during the beginning of the year 2021 was immediately defined by the US as a riot and violent attack, which caused five people dead and more than 140 injured. Multiple US allies rose in no time to express their concerns over the protests and condemned the violence, describing it as “an attack on democracy”.

However, even till today, western countries still adopted a double standard on the riots in Hong Kong, which only violated much more on democracy as well as a country’s sovereignty.

The Hong Kong national security law

Under such a background, China passed the Hong Kong national security law last year before the 23rd anniversary of the Hong Kong’s return to China, in order to safeguard the national security and long-term peace and prosperity of the city.

Under the national security law, Hong Kong police arrested 53 people in January on suspicion of “conspiring to subvert state power” for organizing and participating the so-called “primary election” last year, 47 of whom was prosecuted on Feb. 28, 2021.

The national security law has been and still is playing an important role in coping with the multiple serious problems Hong Kong faces in both internal and external environment, under which “certain success has been achieved in maintaining order, fighting the virus, addressing people’s difficulties and reviving the economy,” Chinese President Xi Jinping commented hearing Carrie Lam’s work report on Jan. 27, 2021.

Patriots governing Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s transition from chaos to stability has once again demonstrated that the principle of “patriots governing Hong Kong” must be always upheld to ensure the steady and sustained implementation of “one country, two systems,” Xi stressed.

“‘Patriots governing Hong Kong’ means after its return to the motherland, Hong Kong must be governed by patriots and the power of the HKSAR must be in the hands of patriots,” Xia Baolong, the vice chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC and the director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, elaborated during a symposium on improving “one country, two systems” institutional framework held in Beijing, Feb. 22, 2021.

Moreover, immediate efforts are called on from various sectors of Hong Kong society to plug electoral loopholes imperatively to implement the principle of “patriots governing Hong Kong”.
