HOUSTON, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Storms with several tornadoes hit the greater Houston area in the U.S. state of Texas on Tuesday, killing one person.

The U.S. National Weather Service confirmed later Tuesday that at least six tornadoes touched down in the greater Houston area early Tuesday, causing damage in the cities such as Van Vleck, Missouri, Rosenberg and Stafford.

In southwest Montgomery County, a high school student was killed in a crash during the storms.

In Van Vleck, a small town about 96 km southwest of Texas' largest city of Houston, a tornado with winds of up to 160 km per hour damaged homes and injured at least six people.

In Missouri City, Fort Bend County, a tornado damaged about 40 homes.

In Houston, about 25,000 customers lost power, mostly in Fort Bend and southwest Harris counties.

The Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport, Houston's two main airports, were also affected by the stormy weather with about 150 flights being delayed.
