Year of tumult: how will US deal with the endless disappointment from its people

The year of 2020 has been a turbulent year for the US, full of tumultuous developments: the president’s impeachment trial, a deadly pandemic that hardened the nation’s partisan divide and upended the economy, a racial reckoning that reverberated through American governance and culture, and with even more going on in the beginning of 2021.

When the year ended, an unfathomable 330,000 Americans have died of COVID-19. “The government is bigger after passage of the most expansive relief packages in the nation’s history to address the costs of the virus, still not under control,” quoted a round-up by USA TODAY, “in the wake of politics of the most brutal sort, some scholars and citizens worry that fundamental democratic institutions have been bruised.”

A poll was jointly conducted by USA TODAY and Suffolk University earlier in December, 2020 for the year’s public assessment. About a quarter of the people surveyed when asked to note one single word to describe 2020 chose the word “awful” or “terrible” or “horrible”, according to a report posted by USA TODAY on Dec. 28, 2020. 15% used expletives that are not appropriate to show here. Nearly all of the 1,000 people surveyed between Dec. 16, 2020 and Dec. 20, 2020 cited words that “reflected strain or pain”.

The report pointed out, the past year has been a year of tumult for America. In many ways, 2020 changed the US, creating “a big fork in the road” with challenges for the US government to tackle in the New Year.

Entering 2021, four significant questions are still yet to be answered by the US as the USA TODAY proposed. “Was democracy damaged? Was there a turning point on race? Will COVID-19 be vanquished? Will voters be exhausted or engaged?” Hopefully the New Year will give the American people a better answer.
