Cambodia awards Chinese medical aid team with honorable medals

Cambodia awarded the members of the medical aid team sent by China earlier this year amid the Covid-19 pandemic with the Medal of Friendship and Cooperation at the Cambodian Embassy in Beijing on June 11, 2021. A Chinese aid team comprised of seven medical experts arrived in Cambodia on Mar. 23, when the country was having a hard time combating the virus.

China’s first medical team to ASEAN

A team of seven medical experts specialized in various areas, including respiratory, public health, infection control and traditional Chinese medicine was sent to Cambodia in March during challenging time. They were was selected and organized by China’s National Health Commission and the Health Commission of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region

It is the first medical team China sent to any ASEAN country for Covid-19 prevention and control, demonstrating the deep friendship between the two sides. Alongside, China also donated a batch of medical materials to Cambodia, including test kits, N95 protective masks, surgical masks, isolation gowns and medical protective suits.

During the team’s 15-day stay in Cambodia, the seven Chinese experts worked side by side with local medical staff, introducing China’s pandemic control experience on quarantine, diagnosis and treatment procedures. A remote consultation system was established as well.

Friendship and Cooperation between China & Cambodia

Cambodia showed firm confidence and support for China to win the battle against the Covid-19 epidemic since the outbreak. Cambodian Prime Minister Hung Sun came to China at the most serious stage of China’s fight against the coronavirus in February, providing donations and medical supplies when China was in need. When Cambodia suffering from the pandemic, China also made its utmost effort to provide support from all aspects to Cambodia.

“China and Cambodia are good neighbors, good partners, good friends and good brothers. China is willing to work with Cambodia to make continuous effort to fight against the pandemic, deepen health cooperation, strengthen policy making and carry out multi-level technical exchanges,” Wang Jiangjun, Party Committee Member of National Health Commission, stressed during the award ceremony, “the two sides will continue to make new contributions to improving the health and well-being of the people of two countries, building a global community of health for all.”

“We highly value and appreciate the excellent work of the Chinese medical group of seven experts assisting Cambodia in the fight against the pandemic,” Khek Sysoda, Cambodian Ambassador to China, said in her speech, “the contributions of yours have been highly recognized by Cambodian national leaders and Cambodian people.”

It is known that by the end of May, China had provided Cambodia with over 5 million doses of Sinopharm and Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine. On June 12, 2021, another batch of China’s Sinopharm vaccine arrived in the country.
