The 2021 Africa-China Poverty Reduction and Development Conference was successfully held online on Dec. 7.

The event was hosted by the National Administration for Rural Revitalization of China and organized by the International Poverty Reduction Center in China under the theme of "Africa-China Cooperation in Poverty Reduction: Policies and Practices of Rural Development".

More than 70 participants from 26 countries attended online to share views and experiences on poverty reduction and rural development as well as further progress in China-Africa cooperation.

Elisio Jamine, Deputy Head of Mission of the AU Permanent Mission to China, noted that addressing poverty and achieving sustainable development are the common agenda of China-Africa cooperation.

"China's poverty reduction in rural areas, anchored on agricultural modernization, offers good insights for Africa's socio-economic transformation. For Africa to succeed similarly, we must work together in solidarity," he said.

Agnes Kalibata, President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, highlighted the importance of helping the rural poor in a bid to end poverty, noting that China’s experience of poverty alleviation is worth repeating.

"It is impressive to note that China has lifted 700 million people of its population out of absolute poverty in a little over four decades. This success was built upon a dramatic transformation of the agri-food industry through the supportive policy environment, as well as investments in modern technologies, inclusive finance, and free 9-year education covering all of China's rural population," Kalibata said. She added that this is a strategy that can be emulated in Africa to transform the lives of over 306 million people who still live in poverty.

In the plenary session of the meeting, Carlos Watson, representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in China, noted that China’s experience in poverty alleviation and agricultural development is a national treasure of knowledge to be shared with the rest of the developing world.

"The incredible development and achievements reached by China in a record time affecting a record number of people has resulted in what I call a great Chinese national treasure of knowledge. This treasure is a vault filled with a vast number of proven solutions that China has developed and applied to achieve its own remarkable development results," he said.
