Grain-Gas Circulation: Unlocking New Possibilities in Green Agriculture

Shangshui County in Henan Province has pioneered a "Grain-Gas-Grain" circular model to promote green agriculture and rural revitalization. By collecting crop straw after harvest and processing it through advanced dry anaerobic fermentation, the project produces biogas to supply clean energy to 50,000 households, while returning digestate and organic fertilizer to fields to restore soil fertility. Integrated services, from harvesting and straw collection to land plowing, have improved efficiency for farmers, reduced pest risks, and created about 100 local jobs. With over 400,000 tons of straw processed and carbon emissions cut by roughly 480,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent by 2024, the project demonstrates how energy transition, ecological restoration, and income growth can work together, offering a replicable model for sustainable agriculture.
