Jinbazhamusu: inheritor of the Gesar epic

我叫金巴扎木苏，蒙古族

I’m Jinbazhamusu, a member of the Mongolian ethnic group.

现在是86岁

I’m 86 years old now.

1982年开始我就从事《格萨(斯)尔》文化传承一直到现在

Since 1982, I’ve been engaged in the cultural inheritance of the Gesar epic.

我是国家级传承人

I’m a national-level inheritor

巴林右旗是我的家乡 也是这个格萨(斯)尔故乡 又是格萨(斯)尔发源地（之一）

Baarin Right Banner, my hometown, is also the hometown of the Gesar epic and one of its origins.

格萨(斯)尔是一个消灭妖魔的 为人民谋幸福的民族英雄的形象

Gesar as a person is a heroic figure who vanquishes monsters to bring people happiness.

它不仅是一个传说 是一部活着的诗史

Gesar as a classical literary work is not only a legend, but also a living epic.

格萨(斯)尔是中国三大史诗的最重要的一个史诗

Gesar is the most important one of the three Chinese epic poems.

也是蒙古族文学的三大高峰之一

It’s also one of the three greatest works of Mongolian literature.

2009年 格萨（斯）尔列入联合国教科文组织人类非物质文化遗产名录

In 2009, the Gesar epic was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

是蒙古族和藏族在很多年的历史创作的一个英雄人物

Long long ago, the ethnic Tibetan and Mongolian people created this heroic figure.

格萨尔故事讲述的是天界看到人间大乱

According to the epic, the god of heaven finds that human world are in turmoil,

便让格萨(斯)尔下凡让要他成为蒙古草原上的可汗，降妖除魔

so he asks Gesar to descend to the earth, making him the Mongolian Khan to eliminate devils.

为民除害促成各部落和睦相处共建美好家园

Gesar finally vanquished monsters and established harmony and peace among all the tribes.

格萨(斯)尔说唱用的乐器有很多种

Various musical instruments are used to accompany storytelling and singing of the Gesar epic.

这里面重点是低音四胡 还有这个“潮尔”，也有这个马头琴等等

The most important ones include bass sihu, Chaoer, and Matouqin (all traditional Mongolian string instruments).

我们蒙古族民族常有的这些个乐器

The commonly-used Mongolian musical instruments

它都在用这个说唱里面

are all involved in the storytelling and singing.

马头琴声音和长调结合在一起

We combine the sound of matouqin with long song

它是高亢、嘹亮的这个效果

to create a resounding and resonant effect.

格萨(斯)尔是文学艺术，又是练唱艺术

Gesar is both an art of literature and an art of singing.

我现在有400个徒弟

Now I have 400 apprentices

巴彦淖尔、锡林郭勒、呼伦贝尔、哲里木、通辽、赤峰

coming from Bayannur, Xilingol, Hulunbuir, Jirem, Tongliao, and Chifeng.

我的这个愿望就是那样 把这个格萨(斯)尔讲来在我们子孙后代

My hope is to pass on the Gesar epic to the future generations.

每一代都要记录他，发扬广大

I hope that it can be preserved and promoted by every future generation.
