Stand with China: Nigerian international student helps Wuhan to combat the virus as a volunteer

Oscar Chijioke Nkwazema, known as Wang Xin in Chinese, stayed in China as part of Wuhan’s effort in fight against the COVID-19.

Coming from Nigeria, Oscar has been an international student majoring in mechanical engineering in China University of Geosciences since last September. As the outbreak of the COVID-19 hit Wuhan, epicenter of China, he decided to join a volunteering team in his college called “Ironman”, which consists of international students from 13 different countries and dedicated to the fight against the virus.

"I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who helped us amid epidemic", Oscar said when he recalled the unexpected outbreak of the novel coronavirus, "Every measure our college has taken is a big relief for us as the coronavirus pandemic fanned panic. Teachers and volunteers take risks to deliver the necessities for international students who mostly stay in their dormitory building. Medical assistance is also continuously guaranteed."

Beside food and protective materials, China University of Geosciences also provided students with necessary psychological counseling, a teacher of China University of Geosciences called Luo Wenxu told Guangming Online. "All of our teachers for teaching and management of international students tried to serve international students in every possible way. They care about students’ daily need and psychological health."

Although daily tasks are complicated and overloaded, Oscar cherishes his experience during the last few months very much, for he feels fulfilled and happy. "It’s a precious and valuable job for me," he said, "I can help others to overcome difficulties confronting them through my own voluntary service, which makes me proud and happy. I think my work matters for students I’ve given a hand to."

Oscar also extend his gratitude to the Chinese government for its effective and timely measures to fight the virus.
