Galina Reva, a professor Far Eastern Federal University School of Biomedicine, Vladivostok, Russia, said that Chinese scientists are on the best path that helps them achieve the highest efficiency to develop a COVID-19 vaccine, according to a news report published by Russian News Agency Sputnik on Aug. 20, 2020.

Liu Jingzhen, chairman of Sinopharm, said a Chiense inactivated COVID-19 vaccine would be expected to be on market by the end of December after approval.

Galina Reva said that the most important thing for Chinese scientists is a truly effective vaccine, which is also their ultimate goal. The question of who leads the vaccine research and development is beside the point. China is not satisfied with the dead end that leads to high treatment costs so they’re going their own way that is not the same one as the U.S. takes, she said.

The results of the research and development of the vaccine should be correct, and in this case, the best strategy is no to rush into extensive clinical trials, she added.

For Galina Reva, the most promising one is the inactivated virus vaccine. Only if the virus is weakened through repeated vaccinations can the vaccine be effective, and this would take a long period of time. Only time will tell if the vaccine is truly safe and effective.

Far Eastern Federal University is a participant in Russia’s Project 5-100, which aims to improve the competitiveness of the leading universities in Russia.
