Global COVID-19 cases exceed 100 million

The cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide surpassed 100 million on Jan. 28, 2021, according to World Health Organization (WHO).

Globally, as of 6:31pm CET on Jan. 28, there have been 100,455,529 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 2,166,440 deaths, reported to WHO.

The United States, the worst-hit country around the world, reported 25,198,841 confirmed cases and 421,570 deaths. India and Brazil followed with 10,701,193 and 8,933,356 confirmed cases, respectively.

Countries with more than 2 million confirmed cases include Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Germany, and Colombia. Countries reported more than 1 million confirmed cases include Argentina, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, Iran, Ukraine, Peru and Indonesia.

During the last week of January, 3.7 million new cases were reported to WHO globally, declining by 13% as compared to the week before. While it was the third consecutive week showing a decline in newly reported cases, the global epidemiological situation is still complicated and intricate.

Several countries have started rolling out nationwide vaccination to curb the pandemic that had been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by WHO for more than one year.

Yet the vaccine equity remains a question, as the access of COVID-19 vaccines have still been restricted to several countries. To help promote international cooperation on and fair distribution of vaccines, China has joined the WHO-led COVAX initiative, and vowed to continue providing COVID-19 vaccines to other countries, especially the developing countries, in a timely manner within its compacity.
