[Overview] Addis Ababa is the capital and largest city of Ethiopia and also the country's political, economic, cultural and tourism center. It is located in the central part of Ethiopia and close to the equator. Sitting at the foot of Mount Entoto at an elevation of 2,355 meters, Addis Ababa is the highest city in Africa. It covers an area of 527 square kilometers and has a population size of about 4 million.

[Politics] Addis Ababa is a chartered city that has the status of both a city and a state. The 138 members of the city council are elected every five years. The city government consists of the mayor, directors of various bureaus and officials appointed by the mayor. The incumbent acting mayor Takele Uma came into office in July 2018.

[Economy] As the economic center of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa is home to over half of the businesses nationwide. It is also the country's financial, insurance, telecommunication and infrastructure center. The industrial zone in the southern suburb contains a large number of enterprises engaged in building materials, textile, foodstuff and leather processing, while the famous Merkato in the city is Africa's largest outdoor fair. There are also distribution centers of coffee, grain, tobacco and other produce in the city.

[Culture and Education] As the national educational and cultural center, Addis Ababa boasts a large array of cultural facilities, memorial buildings and places of interests, such as the Addis Ababa University, National Museum of Ethiopia, Ethiopian Development Research Institute, Ethnological Museum of Ethiopia, Holy Trinity Cathedral and Church of St. George. Tourist attractions in the near suburbs include Mount Entoto, a lava lake and Lower Valley of the Awash. [Relations with Beijing] Beijing and Addis Ababa signed the Memorandum of Understanding in Addis Ababa in November 2003, and they officially became sister cities on April 17, 2006. The two cities have maintained sound official ties in recent years, and worked closely together in such areas as investment and trade, urban management, public facilities and culture.

Investment and Trade: In November 2003, municipal leaders of Beijing led a delegation of government officials and entrepreneurs to visit Addis Ababa at the latter's invitation, during which the entrepreneurs held in-depth discussions with the local chamber of commerce.

Urban Management and Public Facilities: In August 2010, Deputy Director of Addis Ababa's Design and Construction Management Bureau led a delegation to visit Beijing. They held meetings with the Beijing municipal authorities including the Commission of City Planning and Bureau of Land and Resources (currently combined into the Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources), Bureau of Environmental Protection, Water Authority, Bureau of Finance and Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. The delegation was given a detailed account of Beijing's policies and measures regarding urban planning and construction, utilization and development of land and resources, environmental protection, river bank protection and improvement, solid waste disposal, construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure, and fiscal and tax systems.

Environment Protection: In October 2010, Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa attended the Beijing Forum on Sustainable Development of Cities, and discussed with other attendees at the Mayors' Sub-Forum such topics as environmental protection, ecological preservation, building of energy-saving city and the future of cities, and exchanged opinions on how to coordinate socioeconomic development, resource and environment protection worldwide.

Culture: In July 2014, Beijing held in Addis Ababa the Charming Beijing photo exhibition, the exhibition of Beijing's intangible cultural heritage, and Night of Beijing performance, which were very popular among the locals.

【概况】亚的斯亚贝巴市是埃塞俄比亚首都和最大城市,是埃政治、经济、文化和旅游中心。亚市位于埃中部,地处恩托托山脚下,接近赤道,面积527平方公里,人口约400万,海拔2355米,是非洲地势最高的城市。

【政治】亚的斯亚贝巴是州级特别市,市议会每5年选举一次,共设138个席位。市政府由市长、各局局长、市长任命的官员组成。现任代市长泰克勒·乌玛于2018年7月就职。

【经济】亚的斯亚贝巴是埃塞俄比亚的经济中心,全国半数以上的企业均在该市。亚市也是全国金融、保险、电信和基础设施中心。南郊为工业区,聚集着建材、纺织、食品和皮革加工等众多企业。市内著名的“默卡托”市场是非洲最大的露天市场,此外城内还有咖啡、谷类、烟草等农产品集散地。

【文化教育】亚的斯亚贝巴是埃全国的教育、文化中心。除亚的斯亚贝巴大学外,市内还有国家博物馆、埃塞俄比亚研究院、民族博物馆、圣三一大教堂、圣乔治大教堂等纪念性建筑物和名胜。近郊还有安托托山、火山湖和阿瓦什谷地等。

【两市交往】2006年4月17日,北京市与亚的斯亚贝巴市正式建立友好城市关系。2003年11月,两市在亚市签署《谅解备忘录》。近年来,我市与亚市保持着良好的官方往来,经贸交往、城市管理、市政建设、文化等领域合作成果突出。

经贸交往:2003年11月,应亚的斯亚贝巴市邀请,我市领导率代表团及企业家团访问亚市。期间,企业家团与亚的斯亚贝巴市商会进行了对口会谈。

城市管理和市政建设:2010年8月,亚市设计与建设管理局副局长率团访京。期间,代表团先后与市规划委、市国土资源局(现合并为北京市规划和国土资源管理委员会)、市环保局、市水务局、市财政局、市住建委等单位进行了工作会谈,详细了解了我市在城市规划与建设、国土资源利用与开发、环境保护、河岸治理、固体垃圾处理、交通基础设施建设与养护、财政税收体系等方面的相关政策措施。

环保交流:2010年10月,亚市副市长代表该市来京出席“城市可持续发展北京论坛”并在市长论坛上就环保、生态建设和节能城市等内容交流看法及经验,共同谋划城市未来发展,在世界范围内促进经济、社会、资源和环境保护的协调发展。

文化交流:2014年7月,我市在亚市举办了“魅力北京”图片展、北京非物质文化遗产展示、“北京之夜”文艺演出,受到当地民众的热烈欢迎。
