[Overview] The Community of Madrid is the largest one among Spain's 17 autonomous communities. Its capital is the city of Madrid, which is also the capital of the country. Located at the center of the Iberian Peninsula, the community covers an area of 8,021 square kilometers and has a population of 6.414 million.

[Politics] The Community of Madrid is governed by the Government Council and the Assembly. The Government Council comprises one President, elected by the Assembly for a term of four years, and eight counselors, appointed by the President, responsible for day-to-day administration of the autonomous community. The members of the Assembly are elected by popular vote, and the Chairman of the Assembly is elected by the members for a term of four years. The incumbent President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, took office in September 2019.

[Economy] The Community of Madrid is the center of Spain's transportation, logistics, R&D, consumer goods, and high-tech industries. It is the country's second largest industrial center as well as a center of commercial and headquarters economy. Sixty-four of Spain's top 100 companies (ranked by revenue) are based in the Community, along with 49 of the country's 75 largest corporate groups. Many of the country's national telecom operators are also concentrated here.

[Culture and Education] The Community of Madrid has a well-developed education industry. There are 13 colleges and universities in the Community with more than 300,000 students. The academic papers published by colleges and universities in the Community in the fields of social sciences, humanities and biomedicine each year account for about one-third of the national total. The Community is also a popular tourist destination and a cultural center in southern Europe, with rich historical and cultural resources and sound modern tourist facilities.

[Relations with Beijing] On January 17, 2005, Beijing and the Community of Madrid established a sister city relationship. They have maintained strong ties since then.

【经济】马德里自治区是西班牙运输、物流、研发、消费和高新技术产业的中心,全国第二大工业圈,也是西班牙的商业中心和“总部经济”中心。西班牙营业额最大的100家公司有64家总部设在该区。西班牙75家最大的企业集团中有49家总部落户于该区。全国性电信运营商也均聚集在该区。

【文化教育】马德里自治区教育产业发达,所辖范围内共有高校13所,在校学生超过30万。每年在社会、人文研究和生物医药等领域发表的学术论文占全国的1/3左右。该区也是南欧地区的旅游、文化中心,历史文化遗迹丰富,现代旅游设施齐全。

【两市交往】2005年1月17,北京市与马德里自治区正式建立友好市区关系。结好以来,两市区保持良好交往。
