[Overview] Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and the new financial, shipping and industrial center of the country. Located in central New Zealand and the southernmost end of the northern island, Wellington covers an area of 290 square kilometers, and is home to a population of 203,800. 

[Politics] The city's governing body is the city council, which consists of a mayor and 14 members, with the mayor serving also as the council chairman for a term of three years. The city council is both a city management and legislative body. The incumbent mayor Andy Foster came into office in November 2019.

[Economy] The city's pillar industries include financial service, IT, movie and multimedia production. It has a world-leading movie-making industry. Blockbusters such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong and Avatar were made in this city.

[Culture and Education] Wellington is the cultural and educational center of New Zealand with a sound educational system. The city is home to a raft of cultural institutions, including the Crown Research Institutes, Victoria University of Wellington, Museum of New Zealand and National Library of New Zealand.

[Relations with Beijing] Beijing and Wellington officially became sister cities on May 10, 2006. The two cities have carried out exchanges and pragmatic cooperation in a wide range of fields in recent years, including investment and trade, sports and culture.

Investment and Trade: In 2014, the then Mayor of Wellington Celia Wade-Brown led a delegation to the third China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS), at which they held the Wellington Day and a World Tourism Cities Federation promo event to introduce the city's service industry and tourism resources.

Sports: In 2016 and 2017, the Capital Cup friendly football matches were held in Beijing and Wellington respectively, giving a strong boost to the exchanges and collaboration between the two cities in this area.

Culture: In 2007, Beijing Dance and Opera Theater staged performances in Wellington marking the one-year anniversary of sisterhood between the two cities. In 2013, Wellington joined the Beijing-initiated World Tourism Cities Federation. In 2016, Beijing Municipal Education Commission organized a symposium attended by representatives from Beijing municipal universities including North China University of Technology, Beijing Technology and Business University, Capital University of Economics and Business and Beijing Information Science and Technology University and Wellington-based institutes of higher learning such as Wellington Institute of Technology and School of Management & MFH International Institute. The participants had in-depth discussions about strengthening intercollegiate communication.

【概况】惠灵顿市是新西兰首都,同时也是新金融、航运、工业中心。位于新西兰中部,北岛最南端。面积290平方公里,人口20.38万。

【政治】惠灵顿市管理机构为市议会。市议会由市长和14名议员组成,市长兼任市议会主席,任期3年。市议会兼具城市管理和地方立法双重职能。现任市长安迪·福斯特,于2019年11月就职。

【经济】惠灵顿市主要产业有金融服务、信息科技、电影和多媒体制作等。该市电影制作业处于世界领先水平。《指环王》三部曲、《金刚》和《阿凡达》等电影都在惠灵顿制作完成。

【文化教育】惠灵顿市是新西兰的文化教育中心,教育系统完备。该市文化机构众多,主要有皇家研究院、维多利亚大学、新西兰国家博物馆、国家图书馆等。

【两市交往】2006年5月10日,北京市与惠灵顿市正式建立友好城市关系。近年来,两市在经贸、体育、人文等领域开展了广泛交流与务实合作。

经贸领域:2014年,惠灵顿市时任市长赛莉娅·韦德-布朗率团出席第三届“京交会”,并举办“京交会”惠灵顿主题日和世界旅游城市联合会惠灵顿城市推介会活动,宣介惠灵顿市服务产业和旅游资源。

体育领域:2016年、2017年,北京-惠灵顿“首都杯”足球友谊赛先后在北京、惠灵顿举办,有力推动了两市体育交流与合作。

人文领域:2007年,北京歌剧舞剧院赴惠灵顿举办“庆祝北京惠灵顿结好一周年”演出活动。2013年,惠灵顿市加入由我市发起成立的“世界旅游城市联合会”。2016年,市教委组织北方工业大学、北京工商大学、首都经济贸易大学、北京信息科技大学等市属高校与惠灵顿理工大学、惠灵顿国际管理学院等新方高校代表召开交流座谈会,就加强双方校际交往深入交换意见。
