Newly discovered fossil officially named at a museum in NW China's Gansu Province

Photo taken on July 6, 2021 shows the naming ceremony and press conference of "Linxia Giant Rhinoceros" held at the Hezheng Ancient Animal Fossil Museum in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Gansu Province. The "Linxia Giant Rhinoceros" fossil was collected from the late Oligocene 26.5 million years old in the Linxia Basin of Gansu Province, on the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. A complete fossil of head skull, mandible and vertebral was unearthed. The new species, namely "Linxia Giant Rhinoceros", is the largest land mammal in world history that has been discovered so far.
