Fifty years ago, the 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 2758 by an overwhelming majority, restoring the legal seat of the People's Republic of China. Over the past 50 years, China has always adhered to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and has forged ahead in spite of all odds, becoming a mainstay in the cause of world peace and development. For 50 years, China, the world's largest developing country and a permanent member of the Security Council, has steadfastly defended international justice and supported the cause of peace at the UN.
From the day it returned to the UN stage, China has made its opposition to hegemony an important diplomatic mission; in the 1970s, China united with most countries in the world to form a united front against hegemony; in the 1980s, it clearly stated that “we will oppose anyone who engages in hegemony”;and in the early 21st century, it advocated the establishment of a new international order. China's principled stance against hegemony is evident. China has always maintained its position as a developing country, insisting on the equality of all countries, large and small, and upholding justice for developing countries.
China fully participates in the work of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, and actively promotes the settlement of disputes through consultation and dialogue. China has given full play to its role as a permanent member of the Security Council, and worked to promote the resolution of a series of hotspot issues such as in Sudan, Zimbabwe and Myanmar. China firmly supports the UN in playing its due role in the area of non-proliferation, and has facilitated the establishment of relevant dialogue and consultation mechanisms and the signing of agreements on such matters as the DPRK and Iran nuclear issues.
China actively participates in UN peacekeeping operations and guards peace against all odds. China is the second largest contributor to UN peacekeeping, and has sent the largest number of peacekeepers among the permanent members of the Security Council. Since its participation in UN-led peacekeeping operations in 1990, China has sent more than 50,000 personnel to participate in 30 UN peacekeeping operations, playing an important role in monitoring ceasefires, protecting civilians and providing support and security. More than 2,000 Chinese peacekeepers are currently carrying out missions in various mission areas. For more than 30 years, Chinese peacekeepers have been deployed in more than 20 countries and regions around the world, making remarkable contributions to international peace.
