Thematic Forum of "Public Literacy on Science and Green Development" Held under the 2021 World Conference on Science Literacy

Guangming Online: On December 3, the thematic forum “Public Literacy on Science and Green Development” was held successfully in Beijing. Hosted by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology and organized by Guangming Online, the forum was a stream session of the 2021 World Conference on Science Literacy. Numerous renowned experts from home and abroad gathered virtually and discussed measures to improve public science literacy and contribute to the targets of carbon neutrality and carbon peak, with a view to advancing green development on a global scale and building a community of shared future for mankind.

Focusing on the theme of “Improving Public Literacy & Advancing Green Development”, and centering on the key topics of “green literacy”, “energy transition” and “carbon neutrality and carbon peak”, the forum featured keynote speeches by Tarek El Sonoty, Deputy Editor in Chief of Al Ahram, Egypt; Tapan Sarker, Associate Professor of Griffith University, Australia; Inez Z. Ponce de Leon, Associate Professor from the Ateneo de Manila University in Philippines; Vice Chairman Du Shaozhong of the All-China Environment Association; Professor Xie Yi of the Beijing Forestry University; Chen Ying, a research fellow from the Institute of Ecological Civilization, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; and Liang Guanghan, Associate Professor from the School of Communications and Design of Sun Yat-Sen University. The forum was moderator by Secretary General Xiao Lianbing of the Guangming Daily International Exchange & Communication Center.

Experts shared insightful views on the relationship between public carbon accounts and green literacy, enhancing public science literacy through the media, public contribution to the symbiosis between human and nature, carbon neutrality and carbon peak, and building public literacy on science, social enterprises and renewable energy transition, and building curiosity and literacy of science at the community level.

The forum was held virtually and live-streamed online throughout the entire session. Towards of the end of the forum, a total of over 3.31 million people had watched the event online.

The thematic forum was organized by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology as a special forum of the 2021 World Conference on Science Literacy, which carried the theme of “Improving Science Literacy, and Building Green Homes”. The Second World Conference on Science Literacy was held on November 30, following the second preparatory committee meeting on November 29. The six special forums were held between 1 and 3, December.
