On January 21, 2022, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 70 million, including nearly 880,000 new cases reported in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, the nationwide death toll hit 865,155 on the same day.

The "explosive" growth of coronavirus infections has continued for weeks following the country's holiday season in late December. The furious omicron-fueled COVID wave has spurred U.S.-wide breakdown of services and pushed the healthcare system to the brink. While the past single month has witnessed ever shortened increasing interval of each 10 million confirmed cases, the current surge is believed not yet to peak across the board.
