CPC 101: The 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China

The 18th National Congress of the CPC was held in Beijing on November 8, 2,309 Party delegates and specially invited delegates attended the Congress. It’s a very important congress held when China was at a decisive stage in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.

 The meeting vowed that a moderately prosperous society would be built by 2020, by which time China’s GDP and per capital income would double that of 2010. Facing serious environmental problems and degradation of the ecosystem, the meeting proposed the concept of “Beautiful China”, highlighting the importance of “ecological civilization” and the need to respect and protect Mother Nature. This has given a strong impetus to the ecological and environmental protection efforts in China. It enhanced the national awareness of environmental protection, and advanced and gave birth to a large number of new energy industries.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the Party has unprecedentedly intensified its anti-corruption efforts. The government has strengthened institutional and legislative arrangement against corruption, and launched a comprehensive anti-corruption campaign. In the five years between the 18th and 19th CPC National Congress tens of thousands of officials at various levels have been investigated, thousands of corrupt officials who escaped the country have been apprehended, nearly 10-billion-yuan worth of illicit assets have been confiscated. The anti-corruption campaign has achieved significant results, greatly boosting people’s trust in the central government.
