The Royal Portuguese Library of Brazil was designed by Portuguese architect Rafael da Silva e Castro and built between 1880 and 1887 in the neo-Manueline design style. The library, which has been open to the public since 1900, contains over 350,000 volumes of books and works in Portuguese, making it the largest collection of books and works in Portuguese outside Portugal. With its stained glass dome, chandeliers and wooden shelves, the library attracts many visitors each year.
