KATHMANDU, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- A strong earthquake hit the Doti district in far-western Nepal early Wednesday morning, leaving six people dead and five others injured, a local official said.

Several buildings collapsed in the tremor measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale that struck at 2:12 a.m. local time Wednesday.

"The dead bodies were recovered from the debris of the collapsed structures," Kalpana Shrestha, Doti's chief district officer, told Xinhua.

"The injured are receiving treatment in a local hospital," she added.

The epicenter is in the Khaptad National Park area, Shrestha said, noting security personnel has been mobilized as well in the search and rescue operations.

Nepal is prone to earthquakes. Over 9,000 people were killed in the massive 2015 quake.
