The opening ceremony of the first phase of the Chinese-built Light-rail Blue Line project in Lagos of Nigeria was held on January 24. Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria, Cui Jianchun, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria and Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Governor, attended the ceremony and took a trial ride on the light-rail train.
According to the Chinese company, the project is the first electrified urban light-rail transit project in West Africa that is independently designed, built, and operated by the Chinese company. It will improve Lagos’ urban functions and become Nigeria’s new name card.
The first phase of the project started in July 2010 and was completed in December 2022. It is 13 kilometers long.
