China’s ecological and environmental quality maintained an improving trend in 2022, environmental safety was basically ensured but greater difficulties are expected to sustain the momentum, according to a report from the State Council.

Natural ecological conditions were generally stable. The Ecological Quality Index (EQI) value hit 59.6, reaching Class-II by comprehensive evaluation of ecological quality, maintaining the general level of 2021. National land ecological protection red-line area accounted for more than 30% of the total, forest coverage reached 24.02%, and the comprehensive vegetation cover of grassland reached 50.32%. Annual afforestation area reached 3.83 million hectares, 3.214 million hectares of land were turned into grassland, and a total of 1.8473 million hectares of desertified land were remedied.
