During the World Internet Conference Nishan Dialogue on Digital Civilization held from June 25th to 27th, 2023, Himadrish Suwan, chairperson of the Confederation of Young Leaders, emphasized the role of technology, particularly AI, in promoting growth in developing countries, and highlighted India's progress in using AI to bridge the digital divide and improve governance.
India has successfully employed AI to reach its rural population, overcoming linguistic and logistical challenges. Suwan mentioned the country's efforts in providing internet connectivity, with over 50% of the population now connected. India aims to achieve over 90% internet coverage by 2025.
Suwan highlighted the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, an initiative to provide sanitation coverage across India. Through AI-powered portals, the government tracked toilet construction in real-time, ensuring transparency. India achieved 100% sanitation coverage in 2019 with the help of AI technology.
Suwan emphasized the importance of rule-based order, transparency, and data privacy in AI implementation. India launched an AI portal to raise awareness and listed approved AI software to protect citizens from potential threats.
Recognizing China's contributions to technology, especially AI, Suwan called for collaboration between India and China. He believed that Asia could play a crucial role in bridging the AI divide through research cooperation. Suwan encouraged India and China to foster a shared future and cooperation in AI, both for the benefit of mankind and in cyberspace.
