Mongolian leather art, also known as leather carving and painting, has a history of hundreds of years and is the epitome of the nomadic culture of Inner Mongolia. Works of Mongolian leather art was also an important trade item along the ancient Silk Road. In 2021, Mongolian leather art was listed as one of the fifth batch of the national intangible cultural heritages.

This special art features hand-tanned leather that is carved either in perspective or in relief, with sophisticated and sometimes simple patterns. The craftmanship may sound easy but each works goes through the complex process of leather selecting, moistening and softening, pattern drawing, pressing and carving, dyeing, staffing and finishing, as well as framing. Nowadays, craftsmen have not only inherited the traditional Mongolian leather art, but also innovated and enriched its artistic expression, allowing it to go beyond museum exhibitions and become more than just artworks, but also household and decorations items, and even fashion products.
