Feel the Nu Ethnic Culture in the Melodious “Oh Tak Tak” Song

Situated halfway up the snow-capped Biluo Mountains of Yunnan Province, and overseeing Mount Crown of the Gaoligong Mountains, is a place called Laomudeng, which is renowned as the “village on the clouds”. In the local Nu language, Laomudeng means “the place where people like to come”. The Nu people, old and young, be they men, women, or children, are excellent singers and dancers. Among the many folk songs of the Nu ethnic group, the “Oh Tak Tak” is the best preserved, most widespread, most influential, and the most representative traditional music of the Nu ethnic group.

Once a modal particle used by the Nu people to express unspeakable feelings, today “Oh Tak Tak” has become a popular name of Nu ethnic folk songs used at the beginning or end of the lyric line to reflect how the Nu people live, work and love each other.
