Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, Chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance & Revenue, emphasized the significance of the 72nd anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). In an exclusive interview, he praised CPEC as a successful cooperation model that has significantly contributed to Pakistan’s economic development and strengthened bilateral ties. Sheikh said he has witnessed the continuous development and deepening of Pakistan-China friendship for more than half a century, both when he was young in business and after he became a politician in his middle age. “Chinese friends call us ‘Iron Partner’, as friendly neighbors and iron buddies, Pakistan and China enjoy mutual benefits and win-win cooperation.”
Sheikh acknowledged the industrious nature of the Chinese people, attributing development and prosperity to their hard work. He noted China’s significant role in the international arena, particularly its notable economic achievements over the past few decades. Sheikh highlighted China’s role in the Saudi-Iranian reconciliation earlier in the year as a testament to its growing importance on the global stage.
Discussing the future prospects of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the trajectory of Pakistan-China relations, Sheikh highlighted his extensive experience with China spanning over 50 visits in 51 years in his capacity of a businessman and later a politician. Having witnessed China’s development firsthand, especially during the transformative decades of reform and opening up, Sheikh underscored the remarkable progress made in the past ten years through the collaboration on the corridor, foreseeing continued advancement and deepening cooperation. He also expressed optimism that the ongoing cooperation would provide further opportunities for Chinese capital and enterprises in Pakistan’s evolving economic landscape.
Sheikh expressed confidence in the enduring and healthy development of Pakistan-China relations. He emphasized that while Pakistan aims to foster friendly and cooperative ties with all nations, maintaining and deepening friendship and cooperation with China will remain Pakistan’s top priority regardless of which political party comes to power. Sheikh underscored that the unbreakable friendship between Pakistan and China is not contingent on the passage of time or changes in other factors—it remains steadfast.
