The launch ceremony for the collaborative project, "Demonstrating the Technical Task Force Model for Poverty Reduction," between China and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), unfolded in Wuyishan, Nanping City, southeast China’s Fujian Province, from Nov. 20 to Nov. 22. This event, featuring the International Symposium on the TTF Model for Poverty Reduction, brought together representatives from international organizations, Chinese government agencies, universities, and businesses, along with over 30 guests from developing countries worldwide.
During the event, participants conducted an on-site investigation at a tea demonstration site in Wuyishan, gaining a firsthand look at commendable efforts in poverty reduction through tea cultivation under the TTF model.
Expressing enthusiasm about the project's launch, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in China, James George, highlighted the TTF model's significance as an exemplary approach for other nations. He shared, “Since 2008, more than one million farmers have benefited from the TTF model through the collaboration that we've undertaken. Seventy-five thousand government personnel were sent to the ground, working with local communities to identify issues and find solutions adapted to local needs.”
Xie Huaan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and specialist in hybrid rice research at the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, emphasized the necessity of embracing eco-agriculture for building a modern agricultural sector. In his words, "Eco-agriculture is the future of sustainable development. It means green, quality, efficient, and safe food production." Xie stressed the importance of continuous innovations by researchers to promote eco-friendly agriculture. Additionally, he emphasized the practical application of these innovations and findings in production.
Another scientist, Liaohong, an in-field agricultural technologist from Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, shared insights into their project focused on plant nutrition. Liaohong's work on the Swallow Nest Tea Plantation in Mount Wuyi demonstrated the tangible impact of the TTF model on improving tea cultivation. Through this initiative, the quality of tea is elevated, subsequently contributing to an improvement in farmers' income.
“We have to link our research institutions and also the experts to the rural economy, to revitalize it as China has been doing for a long time.” Prakash Neupane, Under Secretary at the Nepal Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, advocated for the application of China's successful models in Nepal, specifically endorsing the TTF model as an optimal approach for a nation heavily reliant on agriculture.
Carlos Barragan, hailing from Panama, brings a unique perspective as a participant in AIBO, the Academy for International Business Officials. Expressing admiration for the lectures received, Barragan acknowledged China's success in poverty reduction and highlighted the clear path to development. His comments emphasized the importance of cross-cultural learning and the potential for Panama to benefit from China's experiences and techniques.
