The Great Wall of China is a monument to Chinese history and a World Heritage Site. It has played host to more than 520 Heads of States and Governments from all over the world, including the previous President of Singapore, Sellapan Rama Nathan.
On September 15, 2001, Nathan climbed the Badaling Great Wall in Beijing, China. From a distance, the Great Wall had the similature of a dragon soaring into the sky, majestic and spectacular.
On the same day, 77-year-old Nathan climbed the Great Wall and was deeply surprised by its magnificent scenery, long history and profound culture.
He listened attentively to the introduction about its history, its construction process and how it has been preserved. His smile showed nothing but affirmation and recognition.
When passing through a battlement, Nathan, on the spur of the moment, assumed the posture of pulling back the string on a bow and shooting an arrow, as if he had become a soldier defending his country.
Nathan spoke highly of the Great Wall, writing: “The Great Wall is a symbol of China’s glorious past and a reminder of its history and heritage. I am pleased to have visited and seen all the efforts to preserve it. It not only is a reminder of China’s heritage for the Chinese people but also for fellow Asians to share this heritage of China.”
Inspired by Nathan, more and more Singaporeans are coming to China to experience the unique charm of Chinese culture and the Great Wall.
