Early January is the coldest time of winter in Beijing. The Badaling Great Wall in January looks even more precipitous, strong, and majestic in the wind.
On January 10, 2007, Ehud Olmert, then Prime Minister of Israel, climbed the Badaling Great Wall with great enthusiasm.
The cold on the Great Wall disappeared with the warmth of his arrival.
Olmert was also excited and opened his arms with a childlike smile as he was photographed.
The familiar feeling awakened his childhood memories and the Chinese complex in his bones.
Olmert’s grandparents and father had both lived in Harbin, China for many years. Olmert has always had a Chinese complex, telling the Chinese media, Chinese culture has become part of his family’s heritage and the first memories of his childhood in Israel.
“Thank you for preserving our family’s past and for giving a sense of dignity to those who were part of the Jewish community.”
Olmert visited China in his capacity as Israel’s prime minister on an official visit for the 15th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Israel.
It was more like a revisit to his hometown, with a climb to the Badaling Great Wall being one of the key stops on his itinerary.
He asked the staff accompanying him on the trip, Why was the Great Wall built so strong?
An expert on the Great Wall replied, “It reflects the aspiration of the ancient builders of the Great Wall, the aspiration of peace for generations to come.”
The Great Wall is a symbol of peace, and every brick and stone of it embodies the Chinese people’s desire for peace.
Peace is also the common pursuit of people inside and outside the Great Wall, as well as people all over the world.
Olmert left a sentimental inscription: “This is a great wall which is a testament to the resolve of the Chinese people to defend this country. I hope in our days it will be an aspiration for peace and friendship amongst nations.”
