Implementing the "Global Development Initiative": IPRCC in Action

In September 2021, President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Development Initiative (GDI) at the general debate of the 76th United Nations General Assembly. Poverty reduction stood first among the eight key areas identified.

Since the initiative was proposed, IPRCC has been devoted to building an international platform for poverty reduction and development, carrying out research, training, cooperation, and knowledge exchanges, sharing China’s poverty reduction experiences with the international community.

The “Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum” aims to raise international awareness of poverty reduction and strengthen global sharing of poverty reduction experiences. So far, the forum has been held 12 times.

Focusing on the ASEAN countries’ concerns over poverty reduction and development, the IPRCC organized the “ASEAN-China Forum on Social Development and Poverty Reduction”. To date, the forum has been held 17 times.

In order to deepen poverty reduction cooperation between China and Africa, the IPRCC continues to hold “FOCAC—Africa-China Poverty Reduction and Development Conference”, building a bridge for poverty reduction exchanges between China and Africa. Thus far, the conference has been held 13 times.

The “CELAC-China Forum on Poverty Reduction and Development” helps to establish a platform for sharing poverty reduction and development experiences with Latin America and the Caribbean. So far, the forum has been held 4 times.

Addressing the poverty reduction needs of developing countries, IPRCC has held over 200 international poverty reduction training programs, providing training to over 15,000 government officials and poverty reduction staff from over 100 countries and regions.

To better implement the GDI, IPRCC has also established an extensive global network involving international organizations, institutions, and poverty reduction departments of many developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In November 2022, it jointly launched the Africa-China Alliance for Poverty Alleviation with 30 Chinese and international institutions.

Besides, technical assistance projects for poverty reduction demonstration in East Asia have been carried out in rural communities in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, helping impoverished villages get rid of poverty and achieve sustainable development. A new phase of the project is well underway.

Research products such as the IPRCC Annual Reports, International Poverty Reduction Briefing and Working Paper Series have been carried out by the IPRCC to strengthen knowledge sharing regarding poverty reduction.

In addition, IPRCC continues to deepen multilateral and bilateral exchanges and cooperation. It has established long-term exchange and cooperation relationships with international organizations like the World Bank, the UNDP, the FAO and the SCO, and many developing countries such as Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Brazil, Venezuela, Mauritius, etc. By signing cooperation agreements and sharing knowledge and resources, the global cause of poverty reduction is advanced.
