Shared path toward modernization: Sierra Leone’s Parliament Speaker reflects on ties with China

In his interview with Guangming Online, Segepoh Solomon Thomas, Speaker of the Parliament of Sierra Leone, shared his reflections on China’s impressive development and its close relationship with Africa. Recalling his second visit to China, Thomas expressed admiration for the country’s remarkable transformation over the past few decades. He noted that, just 45 to 50 years ago, China was a low-income country, and today, its achievements serve as an inspiring example for developing nations. “China’s progress is a testament to what can be achieved when a country develops according to its own path and model,” he said.

Thomas also highlighted the shared experiences between China and Africa, particularly their histories of overcoming poverty and struggle. “Both China and Africa understand what it means to fight against poverty, and this creates a natural connection between our peoples,” he said. He pointed out that China’s approach to cooperation with Africa is based on mutual respect, allowing African nations to improve the lives of their people in line with their own standards. For Thomas, this partnership has made China an invaluable and understanding ally to the African continent.

Responding to media claims that China’s presence in Africa represents “new colonialism,” Thomas firmly dismissed such assertions, calling them unfounded and misleading. “China’s cooperation with Africa is based on sincerity and mutual benefit,” he affirmed. He praised the positive influence China has had on the African continent, particularly in terms of infrastructure and economic growth, and expressed confidence in the continued growth of Sino-African ties.
