Dr. Ismael Buchanan, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science, School of Governance, Development and Society, at the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) of the University of Rwanda (Huye campus), the Founder and CEO of Rwanda Institute of International Affairs (RIIA), shared his thoughts on the evolving China-Africa partnership in a recent interview with Guangming Online.
He noted the historical significance of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), highlighting its role in advancing the idea of a China-Africa community with a shared future. Dr. Ismael praised FOCAC for its achievements in promoting joint modernization, with a particular focus on the Global South. His comments underscore the growing importance of cooperation between China and Africa as they strive for mutual development.
In March, 2024, Dr. Buchanan participated in the 13th Meeting of the China-Africa Think Tanks Forum. The event attracted nearly 300 participants from over 50 countries, including scholars, experts, diplomats, and representatives from NGOs, etc. Dr. Buchanan further called for the establishment of a research center to facilitate closer collaboration between experts from both regions. The goal, he explained, is to deepen mutual understanding and ensure that both sides can effectively work together to address the interests and challenges of the Global South. By fostering high-level cooperation in academic research, Dr. Buchanan hopes that China and Africa can contribute to a more cohesive global development strategy, strengthening their collective influence on the international stage.
