JERUSALEM, March 24 (Xinhua) -- An elderly man was killed and a soldier seriously wounded on Monday in an attack in northern Israel, Israeli authorities said, adding security forces have shot and killed the assailant.

In the incident near Tishbi Junction, southeast of Haifa, a man in his 70s was pronounced dead at the scene, while a soldier in his 20s sustained severe injuries and was taken to a hospital, according to Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service.

The Israeli military identified the younger man as a soldier.

Police said the attacker drove his vehicle into civilians at a bus stop, hitting the soldier before exiting the car and stabbing him repeatedly. The attacker then opened fire with a rifle at a passing vehicle, killing the elderly passenger. The driver, identified as the victim's son, was unharmed.

It added that Border Police officers patrolling nearby shot dead the assailant, without providing further information on his identity. The police called the incident a "terror attack."

The attack occurred amid Israel's ongoing large-scale raid in the occupied West Bank and renewed deadly assaults on the Gaza Strip.
