On March 30, a puppet "National Government" was set up in Nanjing, with Wang Jingwei as acting president.

From March to the end of the year, the anti-Japanese base areas conducted a series of counter-campaigns against the enemy's "mopping-up" operations.

On August 20, the Eighth Route Army launched 100 regiments of 400,000 men in a battle in north China. This battle, popularly known as "Hundred-Regiment Campaign," was the biggest offensive led by the Communist Party of China against the enemy during the war.
