From January 4 to 11, 1941, the headquarters of the New Fourth Army and its forces in southern Anhui, while relocating northward as ordered, were besieged by stubborn Kuomintang forces in the Maolin area of Jing County, Anhui Province. This event became known as the New Fourth Army Incident (or Southern Anhui Incident).

On December 8, 1941, Japanese forces launched a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. naval base in Hawaii, marking the outbreak of the Pacific War.

On December 9, 1941, China formally declared war on Germany, Japan, and Italy.

From December 1941 to January 1942, Chinese forces achieved victory in the Third Battle of Changsha.
