GENEVA, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on Tuesday condemned the killing of five Sudanese Red Crescent (SRC) volunteers who were on duty in the city of Bara, North Kordofan, Sudan, on Oct. 27, saying it was "horrified, shocked, and deeply saddened" by the incident.
According to an IFRC statement, three other volunteers remain missing.
"Any attack on humanitarian teams is unacceptable," the IFRC said, reiterating its call for full respect for the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems and the vital humanitarian services they represent.
The Sudanese Red Crescent team was on an official mission as part of a food distribution operation in Bara. The volunteers were clearly identified by wearing Red Crescent vests and carrying official identification cards issued by the local branch, the statement said.
Since the start of the conflict in Sudan, the Sudanese Red Crescent has lost 21 members while on duty, the IFRC noted. Globally, 25 Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers have been killed in 2025 while carrying out humanitarian work. ■
