As China and Suriname mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, Jeffrey Lau, a member of the National Assembly of Suriname, spoke exclusively to Guangming Online during the 2026 Interregional Seminar on the Achievement of the SDGs for Parliaments of Developing Countries. Reflecting on the two countries' deepening bilateral ties, Lau said that mutual understanding, respect and cooperation are key to building lasting friendship between China and Suriname.
From Chinese New Year celebrations and Chinese language education to longstanding trade ties, Chinese culture and the Chinese community have become an integral part of Suriname’s multicultural society. Lau believes these connections provide a strong foundation for deeper parliamentary exchanges and a better future for China-Suriname relations.
