BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Guangming Online)--The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) on Friday successfully hosted a major roadshow in Beijing, showcasing the country's rich cultural heritage and diverse tourism offerings. Beijing was the first Chinese city to welcome the Bureau's post-pandemic China roadshow in 2023. Its return to the capital after three years highlights SLTPB's continued commitment to and investment in the northern China market, with Beijing serving as a key gateway to the region.

The delegation was led by Mr. Chinthaka, Deputy Director General of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Head of its China operations, together with SLTPB officials and representatives of nearly 20 leading destination management companies, hotel groups and inbound tour operators from the island. They held one-to-one business meetings with delegates from more than 100 outbound travel agencies in Beijing, presenting a brand-new Sri Lanka to the Chinese travel trade in every dimension. The event also featured authentic Sri Lankan cuisine and traditional dance performances full of island charm, allowing guests to experience first-hand the warmth and appeal of the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean".

Mr. Chinthaka said: "Beijing is an important source market for North China and a partner that Sri Lanka deeply values. Returning to Beijing after three years is an opportunity we take very seriously. Beyond traditional group sightseeing, we see two areas of particular potential in the Beijing market. First, corporate meetings and incentive travel (MICE): Sri Lanka is fast emerging as a new MICE destination for China. Second, high-end tailor-made travel and family study tours: with world heritage sites, wildlife, tea plantations and beaches, Sri Lanka can meet Beijing travellers' demand for small-group, in-depth and high-quality journeys. Through this roadshow we hope to rebuild close ties with our travel agency partners in Beijing and encourage more travellers from northern China to experience Sri Lanka's culture, nature and leisure in depth."
Before the pandemic, China was Sri Lanka's second-largest source market. As the international travel market recovers, Sri Lanka was among the first destinations approved for Chinese group outbound travel, and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau is actively taking measures to restore and expand the China market. According to the latest data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), Sri Lanka received 100,828 Chinese visitors in the first eight months of 2026, making China the country's third-largest overseas source market; for the whole of 2025, Chinese arrivals to Sri Lanka reached 132,035. On the aviation side, direct flights are already available from Shanghai, Guangzhou, Kunming, Chongqing, Chengdu and Hong Kong, China, giving Chinese travellers more convenient options for their journeys.
Of particular note, Sri Lanka is rapidly emerging as a new destination for China's outbound meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) travel, with broad market prospects. With its distinctive cultural heritage, ecological resources and cost-effective conference and resort facilities, Sri Lanka is attracting growing interest from Chinese corporate meetings, incentive travel and team-building groups.

In 2026, Sri Lanka's tourism continued to win international recognition: it topped Big 7 Travel's "50 Best Islands in the World 2026" list as the "Best Island Destination in the World"; it was named the "Number One Trending Wellness Destination for 2026" in BookRetreats.com's State of Retreats 2026 report; it ranked 5th in U.S. News & World Report's "Best Places to Visit in Asia 2026" and was included in Travel + Leisure's "50 Best Places to Travel in 2026"; and it was listed among G Adventures' "Top 10 Happiest Destinations 2026". In addition, Jaffna, a city in northern Sri Lanka, was selected in Lonely Planet's "Best in Travel 2026" as one of the world's 25 best cities to travel to, a clear reflection of the country's leading practices in cultural and sustainable tourism.
Travel agency representatives from Beijing and the wider North China region said the Bureau's roadshow was timely and substantive, and that the cultural tourism, nature-based experience and MICE products presented were refreshing and full of market potential.
Sri Lanka has long been known as the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean". Built on three core attributes — experiential, compact and diverse — it covers eight categories of experience, including pristine beaches, world heritage sites, wildlife and cultural treasures, making it an ideal choice for Chinese travellers in search of in-depth, quality travel.
