“Human life is finite, but service to the people is infinite. I will devote my finite life to the infinite cause of serving the people.” This is a quote from Lei Feng’s diary and these words still inspire today.

Lei Feng was born in 1940 to a poor peasant family and was orphaned at the age of 7. After 1949, with the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Lei Feng finally got the chance to attend school. He enlisted in the army at the age of 20, became a PLA soldier and later joined the Communist Party of China. Lei Feng loved his post and was true to his ideals and goals. He was diligent and studious, squeezing in time every day to learn all kinds of new knowledge. He led a frugal life but was always ready to help others, and spent all his savings on those affected by disasters as well as his fellow comrades in need.

In his spare time, he was a helping hand for the people around his army station. In 1962 unfortunately, Lei Feng was killed on duty in an accident at the age of 22. Chairman Mao later called the nation to “Learn from Lei Feng”, launching a campaign across the country to follow the example of Lei Feng. March 5 was later designated as the commemorative day for learning from Lei Feng.
