Yang Yuni of the Hani ethnic group grew up in Honghe Prefecture in China’s Yunnan Province, surrounded by the cultural landscape of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Yang founded a cultural and art inheritance center in her hometown to help people in Honghe Prefecture, especially children, to have more opportunities to learn about Hani Terrace culture and to increase promotion of the world heritage site. As a native who was born and grew up in Honghe Prefecture, she feels a responsibility to pass on and protect Hani culture, and she hopes to bring the culture of Hani terraced fields to a larger stage.
This year, Yang came to Beijing as a new member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and prepared a proposal of “Suggestions on Strengthening the Protection and Inheritance of World Living Heritage”. She hopes that the country can issue guidance specifically for the protection of living cultural heritage and carry out pilot work to promote the green development of world heritage.
