EP03: Tian Miao on BDS and its contribution to building a global community of shared future

Q1: Ms. Tian, could you tell us what technical preparation and policy deployment are in place to ensure that “BDS is developed by China, and dedicated to the world”?

Tian Miao: As a system aiming at serving the world and benefiting all mankind, BDS is aimed at promoting applications worldwide. From the technical perspective, a team on the compatibility and interoperability has been established, which can promote the joint applications with other systems, thus the users can enjoy multiple GNSS services without adding too much cost. From the policy perspective, China has been adhering to the policy that China aims at providing services to benefit all mankind. We really adhere to the policy to carry out international cooperation with our partners.

Q2: Yes, indeed. I know currently, China has continued to expand the circle of international BDS friends and to improve its global application. Could you share some examples with us?

Tian Miao: I would like to share the example to cooperate with our partners and the platform of China and ASEAN cooperation, China and the Arab States cooperation, as well as China and Africa cooperation.

BDS cooperation forums have been launched. Engineers, the governmental administrations, and also the scholars and industries have joined this platform to share our thoughts and considerations to make the BDS benefit their own countries.

As for countries along the Belt and Road region, China has carried out interactions from multiple perspectives.

As for education and training, we have trained students from more than 40 countries, and those students have become the technical engineers in the field. As for the interactions, China has carried out the activities such as BDS tour and also established the BDS center in our cooperative partners. Those partners have benefit a lot from our examples of the mature application solutions. And as for the technical perspective, the research on the GNSS performance has been jointly carried out. By the performance assessment and evaluation, the users can know about our performance quite well.

Q3: That’s really inspiring. Now, in your opinion, how does BDS help build a community of shared future for mankind?

Tian Miao: The world is becoming increasingly open and integrated. In this process, China always share the results it has to all the countries and friends. BDS is a public good which is developed by China and dedicated to the world. It can benefit the national security, economic and social development of all nations.

In the path to develop towards an advanced infrastructure in the spatial and temporal reference, BDS will advance its technologies and share all the application solutions with our users. We are keen to share the knowledge that we have, and would like to improve the applications in the industries, and to bring all the sectors to get united. BDS will developed, towards a more advanced and mature system in the future. We would like to serve as a spatial and temporal reference for all the users along the Belt and Road Region, and we would like to build up a shared future in the space community.

Q4: Thank you, Ms. Tian. And my last question is, how do you view BDS development in the long term? And what else do you think China can do in the future to share the benefit and result of BDS?

Tian Miao: From the system performance, we will upgrade our system performance, which will improve the capacity and to benefit all the users.

From the technical perspective, BDS will launch the satellites in the future to improve its capacity and performance.

From the cooperation perspective, we are encouraging all the industries to get involved in the educations of BDS, and to help our cooperation countries to build up their capacity in the industries. We hope that in the future, many users can benefit a lot by the BDS-enabled devices, equipment and services.
